The Spotted Redshank is distinguished by its long, fine bill, reddish-brown legs, and distinctive white spotting on its back and wings, which can be seen at a glance. Its slender build and long neck also set it apart from other waders.
The Spotted Redshank is slightly larger than a Redshank, but smaller than a Lapwing, making it a medium-sized wader.
The male Spotted Redshank has a black back and wings with white spots, and a reddish-brown breast and belly during the breeding season, with the colouration becoming more subdued in winter.
Similar to the male, the female Spotted Redshank's plumage is also black with white spots on the back and wings, and reddish-brown on the breast and belly, although it may be slightly less intensely coloured.
The Spotted Redshank's call is a loud, sharp "teu-teu-teu" or "chu-chu-chu", often repeated in a series of three or four notes.
The Spotted Redshank is a probing feeder, using its long bill to search for small invertebrates in mud and wet soil, and it can be seen flying with a swift, direct flight and a characteristic shallow wingbeat.
The Spotted Redshank can be confused with the Common Redshank, but it can be distinguished by its white spotting, longer bill, and more slender build, as well as its distinctive call.
