Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Corthylio calendula

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny North American bird closely related to the Goldcrest, occasionally blown across the Atlantic to Britain as a transatlantic vagrant. The male has a concealed red crown patch, usually only visible when the bird is agitated or displaying. It closely resembles the Goldcrest in its restless, flitting behaviour through trees and scrub, and has been officially accepted onto the British list.
