The Dotterel is a rare and unusual visitor to Britain, typically seen during its migration periods, often in open, treeless areas such as moorlands and mountainous regions. The Dotterel is smaller than a Starling, measuring approximately 20-24 cm in length, and is also slightly larger than a Blue Tit.
The male Dotterel has a striking breeding plumage, characterized by a brown breast band, grey-brown back, and white belly, with a black stripe above the eye and a reddish-brown crown.
The female Dotterel is similar to the male but lacks the bright reddish-brown crown and has a less pronounced breast band, making it slightly more subdued in appearance.
The Dotterel's call is a high-pitched, whistled "pee-pee-pee" or "chu-chu-chu", often repeated in a series of short, sharp phrases.
Dotterels are ground-dwelling birds that feed on insects, worms, and small invertebrates, often running or walking to catch their prey, and are known for their unusual reversed sexual roles, where females compete for males and defend territories.
The Dotterel can be confused with other small waders, such as the Golden Plover or the Ringed Plover, but can be distinguished by its distinctive breast band, upright stance, and relatively long legs.
